Blue Jays battered by Phillies
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Jayson Werth homered twice, drove in three runs and fell a triple short of the cycle, as the Phillies pounded out 14 hits in a 10-0 victory against Toronto for just their second win in the last 11 games.
Not to be outdone, J.A. Happ (5-0) limited the Blue Jays to just five hits in his first career complete game shutout to remain unbeaten on the year. The lefty struck out four and did not record a walk.
Werth was 4-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored, while Pedro Feliz hit a two-run homer. Carlos Ruiz also ended with a pair of RBI, and Ryan Howard was 3-for-4, walked, scored twice and knocked in one.
Philadelphia snapped a three-game slide overall but has experienced most of its recent troubles with interleague play, where they remain a paltry 5-12 on the year.
Brad Mills (0-1) received his first major league decision and it wasn't one to remember. The young lefty was torched for eight hits and eight runs in four- plus innings in just his second career start. He did, however, record seven strikeouts to just two walks.
Toronto came in with wins in four of its last five.
Werth started his impressive afternoon with a monster two-run blast down the left field line that caromed off the top tier of seats at Rogers Centre. Shane Victorino walked a batter earlier to start the game and scored. Howard later singled to center and scored on Feliz's home run to left-center.
Ruiz doubled in Chris Coste in the fourth to make it a five-run affair, and the margin stretched to nine with Philadelphia's four-run fifth.
Werth doubled leading off, and Chase Utley walked before Howard stroked a run- scoring single to right. That ended Mills' outing, and Shawn Camp came on to load the bases by hitting John Mayberry Jr. with a pitch. Coste plated a run with a hit back through the middle two batters later, and Eric Bruntlett followed with a sac fly. Ruiz then capped the effort with an infield single that scored Mayberry.
Werth smacked his second homer of the game off B.J. Ryan to start the sixth, and Happ retired the last 10 batters he faced to finish off the win.
