Cruzeiro reaches Copa Libertadores finalPORTO ALEGRE, Brazil  — Cruzeiro reached the Copa Libertadores final thanks to a quickfire double from Wellington Paulista which sealed a 5-3 aggregate win over Gremio in their all-Brazilian semifinals on Thursday.

Wellington scored in the 35th and 36th minutes before Rever and Souza struck in the second half to level the score. But Cruzeiro's 3-1 win at home in the first leg proved decisive.

Brazil rallies to win Confederations CupBrazil's beautiful game came alive in the second half Sunday with three comeback goals in a 3-2 win over the United States in the Confederations Cup final.

Luis Fabiano scored two of the goals and Lucio added the third in the 84th minute to give Brazil its second straight Confederations Cup title and third overall.

Spain beats Iraq 1-0 to reach semifinals

spBLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (AP) — Spain tied an international record by winning its 14th straight game, beating Iraq 1-0 Wednesday on David Villa’s goal in the 55th minute to advance to the Confederations Cup semifinals.

Spain (2-0) matched Brazil, France and Australia as the only teams to win 14 straight games and can set the record Saturday when it plays host South Africa in its final first-round match. Spain, the European champion, also is unbeaten in 34 games since February 2007, one shy of the record set by Brazil from December 1993 to January 1996.

Villa slipped between two defenders and sent Joan Capdevila’s cross low and inside a post to beat goalkeeper Mohammed Kassid. With his 30th goal in 46 international appearances, Villa moved past Fernando Hierro into sole possession of second on Spain’s career scoring list behind Raul Gonzalez, who has 44 goals.

Manchester United accepts record $131M Real Madrid bid for Cristiano Ronaldo

cr LONDON (AP)—Manchester United accepted a world-record transfer offer for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid on Thursday, clearing the World Player of the Year to negotiate terms with the Spanish club.

The Premier League champions said it received an unconditional offer of $131 million for Ronaldo, and unlike last offseason is willing to see its 24-year-old star join a major European rival.

United said: “At Cristiano’s request—who has again expressed his desire to leave—and after discussion with the player’s representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player. Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June.”

Sizzling Spain fire six-goal Confed Cup warning

dvJOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Spain fired a six-goal warning on Tuesday as the countdown to the June 14 kick-off of the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa continued.

Striker David Villa, reportedly on the wanted list of super spenders Real Madrid, performed a one-man sales pitch during the first half in Azerbaijan with a hat-trick that set up a 6-0 friendly triumph.
